It had been way too long since we talked about the incredible steamed burger at Ted's in CT, way too long since i stared at the HamburgerAmerica movie and prayed that the day will come for me to satisfy my steamed burger fantasy. I'm happy to report that this day came, and that the memories will stay.
If you're a freak, like i am, about melted quality-cheese, if you have always signed in for cheese-fondue or raclette, then Ted's for you. I was simply overjoyed at seeing fresh cheddar cheese (i think it is) melting all around the patty, dripping from the bun, and providing a suave and enveloping taste, full of buttery, nuttyness, and providing a good amount of acidity.
Ted's fill their steamer with patties and cheese, and let them sit there in the hot steam until a customer orders one. The great advantate is the incredible short amount of time before you start trying to grab this melting piece. The only disadvantage, in my opinion, is that the patty keeps being cooked pass the overdone point, and doesn't really retain any of its interesting flavor. I should note however that it is not dry, since being kept in hot steam for a while.
My last slightly negative point would be for the bun, which i found slightly below par, considering the rest. It is merely a sandwich bun, pretty dense and heavy , which i beleive do not relieve from the relative heaviness (but heaveness as well) of the cheese. A lighter, fluffer bun would have fared better.
At the end, i'm proud to say that the BurgerBabe and me ordered 3 cheese burgers, and a steamed cheese hot-dog. I think we could have kept going on like that with just the melted cheese over a half-bun. I couldn't find a good reason to stop, excpet that it was getting pretty late. This is a A- burger.
