Westville...it was a surprise to me to come back to this little joint in the West, in a place which used to be formely called Soup's Cafe and maintained a tradition of cheap yet tasty eats served by nonchalant students. And to my surprise, again, this ambiance remained the same at Westville, and you'll find yoursefl greeted by some young dudsters whose efficiency is unbeatable.
I am aware that this website is celebrating the great spirit of burgering in America, but i have to say that the BurgerBabe and I were shocked and instantly seduced by Westville's perfectly "gratine" mac and cheese. We had to succumb to this teaser, but please be assured that this only opened up and deepened our appetite for burgers even more.
Then came the beast, a nice quarter pounder (might be slightly more) baby, stuck in between two lobes of a nicely toasted 'portuguese' roll. I think that the HamburgesaPazzina would be upset at this portuguese appelation, but the bun is actually closer to a large and browned muffin. At the end, it does a magnificent job, by holding the beast in place, while still not ripping apart from the dripping juice and yet remaining soft enough for you to bite in it easily. A very good point. The meat was however slightly dry to my taste, and could have use a bit more of char on top. But the cheese melt was brilliant, with a real creamy, almost fondue-esque taste, which gave consistency and an overall good structure to the burger. Add to that a great little eatery ambiance, with non-stop delta blues music in the background, this is a nice self-indulgence you won't regret. This is a B+ burger.

I'll agree with the super mac+cheese with bacon... that's good stuff anytime, and they do a great job with theirs.
I think I must have had a bad burger night or something, cause i've read some glowing reviews on many sites and heard good things first and about this place. But I would have to say that after my initial experience, I would only return for anything other than the burger... maybe a burger at the Bistro and then come here for the homemade oreo cookie and coffee. Actually the other items on the Westville menu and on other patrons tables looked rather tasty... but no more burgers here for me.
First, the Potugeeeeese roll was not toasted at all, it was more like a boring english muffin without the nooks and crannies. The fries were ok, but kinda cold (i know it's not about the fries, but i'm trying to make a point). And the meat was way over cooked and nowhere near the medium-rare... plus it wasn't even that flavorful. I love cheddar cheese, but when the cheese is the best part, not a good sign. I gave this burger a B- only cause I know they can do better... or at least I hope they can.
I miss California already.

BurgerSicko, i'd like to say that according to the pix, your burger was served maybe right between two kitchen shifts... or when the Yanks were batting in the 9th, down by 2, with 2 men out.... That desperate attempt didn't work, i know, but it looks like the chef at Westville was desperate as well (like all of us). I'm calling for a double-check sometimes soon.

Whoa, that bun looks awful! Do you toss that to someone drowning or do you eat it? Westville is one of my favorites in NYC, but that photo of the bun tells me that something is up with their suppliers. They used to have a thinish, toasted Portugese bun for their excellent burger...
