Nested in the edge of Grenwich Village, The Stoned Crow has always been one of my favorite dives in NYC. Its basement like feel with great movie posters and a killer juke box invoke a funky pop art nestalgia that's hard to find in bars these days. BC was drawn to the club on a recent article published in New York Magazine that featured The Stoned Crow's new chef who's a refugee of the famed Corner Bistro. Apparently he was flipping the same burger as the bistro with out the notorious wait.
I am sorry to report that the burger does not reach the height of the Corner Bistro buts its still a tasty burger. Its hard not to compare the two since they are virtually identical. Its served on a basic sesame seed bun (although TSC seemed a little bit smaller than CB) with a few pieces of iceburg lettuce, a small slice of tomato, white onion (served underneath the patt), and several pickle chips on the side. The meat is thick and tender, definitely ground chuck. I chose chedder cheese which was nicely melted over the patty. The meat was cooked a perfect medium rare but there is something missing. Maybe they don't have as good of a meat provider or they are not seasoning it in the same way, or the broiler doesn't work as well, but it just wasn't as good. It was a few dollars more than the Bistro burger but that doesn't effect the taste. It could be the missing $2 McSorley's mugs of beer or the soothing juke box or the fact that you wait so long to get your burger at CB that you're dying to sink your teeth into it. At the end of the day, it simply wasn't as good.
The fries were thin and crispy like the Bistro minus the bacon flavor, and the service was very friendly. They even gave our table a complementary round of beers. This could have had something to do with the influence of the burgerclub, but I never mentioned the club to them. All and all, its a good burger in a great bar for little money. The Stoned Crow garners a strong B. I would definitely go again.
