I was blessed with the opportunity this holiday break to get a chance to try one of the Steak n’ Shake franchises. Not having any locations around the north east, and having heard from several sources the quality burger this place serves, I had to pass on a repeat visit to And I have no regrets on this decision. Steak n’ Shake serves up some good eats.
Steak n’ Shake (at least the one in Hallandale, FL) is a sit down joint. So not a fast food place, but that doesn’t mean you wait long for your burger either. Clean, and staffed with attentive personnel. I ordered “The Original Double” which is their SteakBurger™ with two patties. These Steakburgers consist of “U.S. Beef, including the steak cuts: T-bone, strip and sirloin... That is quick-seared and served cooked-to-order on a toasted bun.”
I ordered mine medium rare, but got a medium well burger. Normally I would be bummed, but the patty is thin, so I understand the difficulty... But don’t say “cooked-to-order”. The burger was plenty moist, the lightly toasted bun had a very pleasant crispness to it, and it was accompanied by a quality slice of tomato, thinly sliced raw white onion, nice thin pickles (sliced length wise), and a small but sufficient piece of lettuce.
This is an attractive, classic looking burger... and tasted as good as it looked. I loved the pillowy yet crisp bun and seared and juicy patty.
I do have one unhappy experience though, and that’s with the other half of the name... I gotta say the shake I had was worst than any place with the word Shake in it should be. I don’t now about the other flavors or side by side ones, but my banana shake tasted like bubble gum... No real banana. Nice and thick, but the to end a yummy burger with this candy beverage was not what I had in mind.
With all the talk about In-n-Out in the West, and Shake Shake in nYc, I wonder if Steak n’ Shake would be on more burger minds and lists if they opened a few chains in the urban market of Cali and the North East.
