Before there was BurgerClub, there was In-n-Out calling my name. This California stand-by has always been a favorite of mine since the first time I tried a Double Double 5 or so years ago... yeah, it's not that long, but I haven't been crazy about burgers that long either. For me, In 'n Out has been that great burger place in the sky where you feel neither ripped-off or disappointed after your visit. At $1.85 for a cheeseburger and less than $4 for a Double Double, fries and soda, you'd think this stuff was average at best... at least for a New Yorker who is used to spending around $10 for a burger alone. But In 'n Out manages to create fresh burgers, crisp fries and unlimited soda refills while keeping your conscious clean... at least your financial conscious.
(eat in double double)
California to me is king of the wax paper wrapped friend. In-n-Out has always been the one that did it for me on visits to the west, and even though I ate at some new (new to me) great Cali burger joints on a recent visit, it's still on top of my list for taste and price. Makes you wonder how the McD's and others we have in the east stay in business out in L.A.
In New York we have the Corner Bistro as one of those places that is always mentioned while waxing burger philosophical... some love it some hate it, some think it's good but not the best... but you can't deny the fact that the place is a nYc institution. And In-n-Out is the same thing for me when it comes to California burgers. I just feel good when I picture the place.
The menu here is simple... just go with #1, #2, or #3 for combos, and you can go with a nice thick shake instead of soda if you choose. But if you're an adventure seeker or picky about what you want, there is an army of choices on the "secret" menu. "Protein style" for no bun wrapped in lettuce... or go 4x4 "animal style" if your extra hungry... four patties cooked with mustard, four slices of cheese, extra spread, pickle, and grilled onions... not bad, but a bit of a task when it comes to eating it. Or what ever else comes to mind... 3x1... 3 beef 1 cheese... or heck go 8x4... 12x15... you name it... i've seen some crazy combos on the photo site flickr.com
(takeout cheeseburger)
On this visit, I went with a Double Double with raw onion... usually I get the grilled onions, but I've grown to love the texture and flavor of a slice of raw onion when married with the condiments and beef. The taste of these burgers is just grand. Nice amount of salt, which goes well with that slight hangover (was in town for two wedding ceremonies) takes the burger to a savory level. The cheese is not the Sharp Cheddar of the more elaborate PUB burgers of the East I love, but for some reason it goes much further than your standard fast food american slice... it's kinda a mix of cheese whiz and cheddar... well proportioned throughout the burger. I'm also a huge fan of the simple fresh bun which cradles the inside and forms itself after each bite.
If your in California, Nevada, or Arizona... I recommend a stop... In-n-Out style.

I've eaten at In'N'Out hundreds of times while growing up, starting in the late 70s. This is the best fast-food burger I've ever had. I gave it a B+ (the high end burgers are better, to be sure, but In'N'Out beats them all when you take into account price, speed, and convenience, I'd say). Unlike some of the other fast-food burgers (what the heck happened to McDonalds and Carl's Jr? These places weren't that bad in the 70s, in my opinion), In'N'Out tastes the same to me as it always has...it's just a good, honest, all-american burger.

I've lived in LA all my life, been eating this things for 25+ years and they are by far the best fast food burger I have EVER had.
Not only do they serve up fresh food, fresh cut fries and meat that is never frozen, they treat their employees very very well. My little bro has worked there ten plus years and now has his own store in Nor Cal. He strives for the cleanest store, most efficient and friendly employees, and he is rewarded by the company greatly. Bonuses, extended paid vacations, it really pays to be a long time employee there.
Unlike my job, when they give you a gym bag after 5 years of service.
