Where were you? Just kidding. Actually if you didn't make it down to the Shack this past monday you were smart. The burgers are fantastic, the crowd, no-goodsky. Apparently, someone started a 'countdown' to opening day on Chowhound. I got there around 1:40 and there must have been 150 people there! I came back at 3pm and got a double cheeseburger right away. Excellent, really, and very impressive for what must have been their 600th burger of the day. Moist on the inside and crispy bits on the outside. They put the burgers on potato rolls and add a little butter too I think! They also use brisket beef apparently....yum

Dude! Hamburger America... that picture is a piece of art! I can not say that our two burgers looked as good, perhaps it was due to our lunch rush visit.
"Our fresh steer burgers are ground daily from sirloin and brisket. All burgers are cooked medium unless otherwise requested."
I should have read the fine print on the menu before I ordered... I didn't expect to be able to request rare to medium rare at a "fast food" place, and I didn't... so my burger was a bit to overcooked for my liking, but it was still tender and juicy in the middle. I went with the double Shack Burger which comes with american cheese, lettuce, tomato, and shack sauce... I didn't put any ketchup on it thinking the "sauce" would be plenty, but there was little sauce and it needed some salt/ketchup (preference).
It is however, a pleasant burger experience. Some blogs have said this burger is the "bomb" and "the best" in the city... I can't say that, and can't even say that it's better than other fast food joints it reminds me of in California... but for NY, this is great. Next time i will ask for medium rare and perhaps go with a single as not to overwhelm the little sauce.
Didn't get the fries and didn't do a shake... but next time, I think the "Concrete Jungle" shake with fudge, banana, and peanut butter will be on my order.
if you like burgers and like spending little money even more, than this is the place. Watch out Blue 9, the competition is heating up in this category.

This a good burger. I ordered a Shake Burger and the meat is loosely packed and juicy. It wasn't over cooked like most "fast-food" burgers. Completely moist and slightly pink on the inside. I love lightly toasted potato rolls and the light butter was a added bonus. The burger could have used a touch of ketchup and some salt but then again, I'm a salt-aholic. The "Shake Sauce" seemed to be mayonnaise with a little something extra and they only put a tiny bit on the burger. So if your down with sauce, you might want to add some condiments.
I think it's a right on fast food style burger and it won't disappoint.
And yeah, it's no In-N-Out but I think it's better than Blue 9.

went back to the shack after an interview in the hood... i liked it a bit better than the first time... maybe because their was no line and they took the time to take care of my burger... but i still haven't gotten the masterfull chared looking burger like hamburger america's... a bit too squishy for me... definitly a good priced burger and a great park to enjoy lunch, but still not an A in my book... maybe the third time will be even better.
the squirrel had a nice lunch too.

Truly an excellent undertaking. A line around the block in Madison Square Park, even in the rain on a weekday during lunchtime - will contest to this fact. New Yorkers hate waiting in lines... need I say more. Juicy, cheesy, oh my and the FRENCH FRIES (that topic deserves an entire website and club all its own) not to mention good selection of beers and if you like, you can take your burger to the desk and it's still juicy, not mushy, and cooked to order.
