Placed on a nondescript major street in Pacific Beach, SD the unasuming Rocky's serves up a serious Burger
Entering this small california style dive you could tell the place had a burger following. Its the kind of place people come to eat burgers and drink beers and thats it. Its a really simple concept: Burger Cheeseburger, 1/2 pound, 1/4 pound, fries soda, beer. Sure they have spirits too, but that's just for show. Their media refrences are proudly framed and posted on the wall's. You order at the bar and eat there or at one of the 5 or high tables set around the small floor space. The kitchen is tiny set right next to the bar so you can see what there doing back there. Enough about the place, lets talk about the burger.
I ordered my burger with chedder medium rare just the way I like my classic burger prepared. It came with green lettuce, juicy red tomato slice, sliced pickle chips, and a thickly cut red onion. The bun is sesame but the juicy patty is the highlight with the Rocky burger.
The older local lady sitting next to us had been attending the bar for over 50 years before it was Rocky's and had stayed loyal ever since. She seemed to know a lot about the bar and the burgers since she apparently eats about one a week. I didn't ask but it apeared that she also drank there once a day and she sure had some stories to tell. More importantly she knew the formula for the beef patty: it has a 30% top round 30% sirloin, and 20% chuck. And what a beatiful combination this was. Even though mine was more on the medium side, it was packed with flavour and had the smooth texture with good amounts of juice flowing from its medium ground meat. The classic sesame bun was complimented the patty nicely and held it together well. The toppings were good, especially the dill pickle chips, but the onion was my biggest problem with this sandwich. It was just too thick. I tasted onion for the rest of the day which is a major problem for me. If I ever return to Rocky's, (which I will surely do if ever in the Pacific Beach area) ill make sure to ask for either a thinner cut of onion, or the grilled version, or maybe ill just leave it off. That combined with a med rare cook, this burger could make it to the A- mark.
